History

John was born in Ireland in 1946. In 1961, at age 15, John left home and moved to Scotland where he commenced work as a tunneller, specialising in drill and blast projects. After 10 years underground, in 1971, John was lured to Melbourne, Australia where he worked on numerous civil and tunnel projects in Victoria, Tasmania, ACT and Western Australia. In 1979, John established the Doherty Group and commenced operations as a civil and tunnel contractor operating throughout Australia.

Civil & Tunnel Pty Ltd is the operating division of the Doherty Group, which is run by John's sons. With over forty years’ industry experience, the Doherty Group expanded and diversified and has been involved in some of Australia’s most iconic infrastructure projects from shaft excavation in Western Australia’s gold fields to the Port Kembla coal loader, Sydney Olympic Village precinct, Garden Island Naval Base Upgrade and the Pacific Highway Widening to name but a few.
