The project involves the construction of a third rail track from Epping to Thornleigh to cater for increased freight train movements between Sydney & Newcastle

Scope of Works:

  • Civil & Tunnel were engaged by Leighton / Lend Lease JV to supply plant, labour and supervision to install 12 underline crossings (ULX) in solid rock as part of the combined service route for the new rail signalling system.
  • The crossings were open excavated using a combination of rock hammer and twin header.
  • The works were performed over three 36-hour time critical track possessions in Sep 2013, Nov 2013 and Jan 2014, with 20 items of plant and 60 personnel supplied around the clock

Scope of Works:

  • Civil & Tunnel were also engaged by Leighton / Lend Lease JV to supply plant, labour and supervision to construct the 5km intertrack drainage pipeline, which is critical to the construction of the new track
  • The pipeline route is predominately in solid sandstone with belts of iron stone present. The alignment of the pipeline is on the limit of the 3m danger zone with the works proceeding adjacent to the live rail track under rail protection.
  • Civil & Tunnel used 35-ton zero swing excavators to hammer the rock and a 13-ton knuckle boom to excavate the trench.
  • The pipeline ranges in diameter from 250-450mm HDPE pipe.
